    The UNLV basketball team’s upset of North Carolina Saturday has landed the Rebels in both national rankings. The Rebels broke into the rankings for the first time this season on Monday, being ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll and No. 20 in the Coaches’ Poll.

    One of my biggest pet peeves with sports fans is how we tend to live in the moment. We get so excited at the outcome of a game that we immediately call it the best ever for our beloved team, or irrationally rank it as one of the organization’s all-time top performances.     Some 15 minutes after supporters of the UNLV basketball team stormed the court at the Orleans Arena to celebrate the Rebels’ upset victory against top-ranked North Carolina, coach Dave Rice finally worked his way past a long line of well wishers to the team’s locker room. As he approached, he could hear joyful players continuing the celebration, cherishing a 90-80 victory against the No. 1 Tar Heels in the Las Vegas Invitational finals.

    The UNLV basketball team has its first signature victory in the Dave Rice Era. After all, it doesn’t get much better than knocking off the nation’s No. 1 ranked team. The Rebels opened the second half Saturday with 14 unanswered points against top-ranked North Carolina at the Orleans Arena to erase a four-point halftime deficit, and never trailed the rest of the game in a 90-80 program-building victory.
